Skydio

Skydio started in 2014 as an MIT spinout, founded by Adam Bry, Abraham Bachrach, and Matt Donahoe, on the bet that computer vision could let a drone fly itself through cluttered spaces better than a human pilot could. That obstacle-avoidance work, first shown off in consumer drones like the Skydio 2, became the foundation the company later built its enterprise and government business on top of. Skydio pulled out of the consumer drone market entirely and now sells into three groups of customers: public safety agencies, industrial and infrastructure inspection teams, and defense and national security buyers. The public safety business centers on Drone as First Responder, where a docked drone launches automatically after a 911 call and streams live video to officers before anyone arrives on scene. The Dock for X10 supports that model, offering twenty-second deployment and unlimited range over 5G so an agency can run a drone program without an operator standing next to the aircraft.

On the inspection side, utilities, telecom companies, and construction firms use Skydio's autonomous flight paths and 3D scanning to check towers, bridges, and facilities without sending a person up in a lift. The X10 is the current flagship airframe, built around modular sensor payloads that mix high-resolution visual cameras with radiometric thermal imaging, and it comes in a defense-specific variant, the X10D, hardened for electronic warfare environments and built to fold down small enough for a rucksack. The X10D made it onto the Pentagon's Blue UAS Cleared List and was selected for the Army's Short Range Reconnaissance program, a notable win in a market segment US drone makers have struggled to hold against cheaper foreign competitors. Attachments like NightSense low-light navigation and Connect Fusion+ extend both the commercial and defense variants for specific missions. Government work has become the larger half of Skydio's business, with the company reporting that a majority of its activity now touches military and government customers, including the US Department of Defense, the UK Ministry of Defence, Indian and Canadian armed forces, and Ukraine, where its drones have seen combat use.

That footprint drew retaliation from Beijing. In October 2024, China sanctioned Skydio after the company supplied drones to Taiwan's fire department, and in early 2025 China's commerce ministry placed the company on an export control list, disrupting a battery supply chain Skydio had depended on. The company responded by opening its first large-scale US manufacturing facility, announced in 2023, to build domestic supply chain resilience and reduce its reliance on Chinese components, a move that also fits the Pentagon's preference for domestically produced small drones over DJI and other Chinese platforms. Skydio remains privately held, reached unicorn status in 2021 as the first US drone maker to cross a billion-dollar valuation, and was valued at 2.2 billion dollars after its 2023 Series E round.
