SNT Dynamics Co., Ltd.

Tracked vehicle transmissions, autocannon, truck axles and gear cutting machines.

//Overview

SNT Dynamics builds the gearboxes that make Korean armour move. Founded in 1959 as a shotgun maker, renamed Tongil Heavy Industries in 1995, then S&T Dynamics in 2005 and SNT Dynamics in 2021, the company works from the Changwon national industrial complex and was designated a Korean defense contractor in April 1973. It is listed in Seoul, reported revenue of about 408 billion won in 2022 and employed roughly 510 people that year. Three businesses share the same machining and gear expertise: defense, automotive powertrain, and machine tools. A sister company, SNT Motiv, sits under the same group ownership and makes small arms, which is a separate business from this one.

Defense powertrains are the anchor. The catalogue runs by vehicle class. X200-5K serves the 350 horsepower K200A1 family of tracked carriers and their variants, HMPT500-3EK powers the Chunma and Biho air defence vehicles at 600 horsepower, HMPT500-4EK drives the 800 horsepower K21 infantry fighting vehicle, XTG411-2A handles the K55 and K77 artillery family, and X1100-5A3 transmits 1,500 horsepower in the K9 self-propelled howitzer and K10 ammunition carrier. At the top sits EST15K, a 1,500 horsepower class automatic transmission rated to 1,700 horsepower and 65 tonnes, developed for main battle tanks. That programme matters because Korea spent years fitting German transmissions to the K2 Black Panther after its own unit failed durability testing. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration eventually approved a fully domestic powerpack pairing the HD Hyundai Infracore DV27K diesel with the EST15K, ending the import dependency and opening an export route. A 1,700 horsepower transmission order worth around 200 million euros followed for Turkey, where the Altay tank programme needed a powerpack.

Weapons are the second defense line. SNT Dynamics produces medium calibre automatic weapons including 12.7 millimetre machine guns, 20 millimetre automatic cannon and 30 and 40 millimetre automatic cannon, sold into Korean vehicle and naval mounts, and it supplies components into helicopter and naval weapon systems along with protection equipment. Commercial work keeps the plant loaded between defence orders. The automotive side makes transmissions and axles for trucks and buses, holds production and export licences as a secondary supplier to Allison Transmission, and has moved into electric drive units. Machine tools are the third leg, with gear hobbing and gear cutting machines, CNC vertical lathes, grinding machines and universal lathes sold to Korean and export manufacturers. That business also feeds the other two, because the gear grinding needed for a tank transmission is the same discipline sold to industrial customers. Buyers should treat the company as a subsystem specialist rather than a platform prime. It does not build vehicles. It builds the transmission, the axle and the gun that someone else fits, which puts it on the supplier list of Hyundai Rotem, Hanwha and their export customers rather than in competition with them. The Korean export boom in armour has pulled the company along with it, and the Turkish order shows the transmission line can travel independently of a Korean platform sale. Component obsolescence and engine partner choices are the practical risks a buyer should ask about.
