SRC Inc

Not-for-profit radar, electronic warfare, and intelligence research for defense and government.

//Overview

SRC traces back to 1957, when it started as Syracuse Research Corporation, a not-for-profit research arm affiliated with Syracuse University, before spinning off as an independent organization in the early 1970s and later rebranding to SRC, Inc. in 2008. That not-for-profit structure, chartered by the state of New York, is unusual in a defense industry dominated by public companies and private equity-backed firms, and it shapes how SRC describes its own mission, positioning itself as a mission-driven research organization rather than a shareholder-driven manufacturer, even though it competes for the same Pentagon contracts as its for-profit peers. Radar is the company's oldest and best-known line of work. SRC develops counterfire and weapon-locating radars, air surveillance radars, and ground surveillance systems, and its Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar software runs inside the AN/TPQ-50, a widely fielded system that detects incoming rockets, artillery, and mortar fire so ground units can find and respond to the source.

Electronic warfare is the second major pillar, built around the Ghost Mantis family of multi-function RF technology, a modular system designed to sense, identify, and disrupt adversary electronic signals across air, land, sea, and increasingly space domains, with the company recently rolling out a third-generation array under that same product family. SRC also builds counter-IED and counter-ISR systems, including the AN/VLQ-12 CREW Duke jammer used to defeat radio-controlled roadside bombs. Beyond hardware, SRC runs an intelligence collection and analysis practice supporting the defense and intelligence communities, and a live, virtual, and constructive simulation business that builds training environments blending real equipment with simulated threats. The company has also pushed into modular open systems architecture work, helping the Pentagon move away from proprietary, single-vendor electronics toward systems that can be upgraded piece by piece.

A separate manufacturing arm, SRCTec, handles production and lifecycle support for the radar and electronic warfare hardware SRC designs, operating as a for-profit subsidiary under the SRC Ventures holding structure even as the parent organization stays not-for-profit. SRC's roots in environmental and toxicological research, a legacy of its university origins, still show up in a smaller environmental and engineering services line that does chemistry, toxicology, and risk assessment work for agencies like the EPA, alongside its core defense business. The company has expanded internationally through subsidiaries in Australia, Canada, and the UK, plus a joint venture in Saudi Arabia, extending its radar and electronic warfare technology to allied militaries beyond its traditional US Department of Defense customer base. Headquartered in North Syracuse, New York, SRC employs more than 1,100 people across its research, manufacturing, and services operations.
