ST Engineering

ST Engineering began in 1967 as Chartered Industries of Singapore, a state-founded firm set up to give the newly independent city-state a domestic weapons manufacturing capability, and it grew through decades of mergers into today's ST Engineering, formed under that name in 1997. The company is majority controlled through Temasek Holdings, Singapore's state investment arm, and trades publicly on the Singapore Exchange, a structure that mirrors the tight link between Singapore's defense industry and its government that shaped the company from the start. ST Engineering organizes into four segments. Commercial Aerospace is the largest by revenue and covers aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul, aerostructure production, and passenger-to-freighter conversions, work carried out partly through Elbe Flugzeugwerke, a joint venture with Airbus that has become one of the busiest freighter conversion lines in the industry.

Defence and Public Security is the segment most relevant to military customers and itself spans land systems, naval systems, and broader C5ISR and public safety work. On land, ST Engineering builds the Terrex infantry carrier vehicle, in service with the Singapore Army and exported to other militaries, the newer Hunter armored fighting vehicle that has replaced older tracked platforms in Singapore's inventory, and the Bionix family of infantry fighting vehicles. The company's small arms line includes the SAR 21 assault rifle, the Ultimax 100 light machine gun, and the STK 40 automatic grenade launcher, weapons designed and built for the Singapore Armed Forces and sold internationally. On the naval side, ST Engineering built the Formidable-class stealth frigates and the Victory-class missile corvettes that anchor the Republic of Singapore Navy's surface fleet, along with a range of patrol vessels and support ships built at its Singapore shipyards.

Infrastructure and Mobility Solutions applies the company's engineering base to civilian markets, including smart city systems, toll collection technology through its TransCore subsidiary in the United States, and rail and road automation. Digital Systems and Cybersecurity, the newest and fastest-growing segment, covers satellite communications, encryption, security operations center services, and broader cyber defense work for both government and commercial customers, an area ST Engineering has pushed hard as it looks past traditional platform manufacturing toward software and networked systems. The company also has a long-running relationship with Israel's involvement in Singapore's early defense buildup and produced the A-4SU Super Skyhawk upgrade for the Republic of Singapore Air Force, a program that helped establish its aerospace credentials decades before the commercial MRO business took off. With around 27,000 employees and operations spanning Asia, the Americas, and Europe, ST Engineering has become one of Southeast Asia's largest and most diversified defense and technology companies, and its position as a Temasek-controlled but publicly traded firm gives it a somewhat unusual mix of state backing and market discipline compared to purely state-owned defense champions elsewhere in Asia.
