Subaru Corporation sells cars. That is the honest headline for a group whose automotive business moved about 936,000 vehicles in the year to March 2025 and booked roughly 4.69 trillion yen of consolidated revenue from plants in Gunma prefecture and Lafayette, Indiana. Bolted onto it is an Aerospace Company working out of Utsunomiya in Tochigi and Handa in Aichi, a contractor to the Japan Ministry of Defense whose lineage runs back through Fuji Heavy Industries, the name Subaru carried until 2017, to the Nakajima aircraft works and a research laboratory founded in 1917. Aviation came first. The cars arrived later and now pay the bills, but the aerospace unit has never stopped building airframes for the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
Helicopters are the most visible part of that work. Subaru developed the UH-2 utility helicopter for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force from the Subaru Bell 412EPX, a civil machine co-developed with Bell, and delivered the first production aircraft in 2022 under the UH-X program that replaces the ageing UH-1J fleet Subaru itself built. Earlier defense output included license assembly of the AH-64D attack helicopter, a line that ended well short of the original quantity. On the fixed-wing side the company has supplied primary trainers to the air and maritime services for decades, the piston-engined T-3 giving way to the turboprop T-7 and the T-5 serving naval students, and it fabricates main wings and tail assemblies as a subcontractor on Japanese fighter, transport and patrol aircraft. Unmanned aircraft are a quieter specialty, with more than 800 airframes across 20 models produced since 1970, among them the Flying Forward Reconnaissance System, an autonomous rotary-wing observation drone fielded by the ground force as an artillery spotter at ranges beyond 50 kilometres. Scheduled maintenance, overhaul, spare parts supply and aircrew training round out the defense side.
Commercial aerostructures anchor the aerospace unit's revenue. Subaru has worked with Boeing since 1973 and builds the centre wing box for the 777, 787 and 777X at Handa, a plant that has shipped structures for more than 3,000 aircraft, and it built the FA-200 Aero Subaru light aeroplane in an earlier era. The automotive segment carries the engineering most buyers recognise, the horizontally opposed Boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the EyeSight stereo-camera driver assistance system, sold through the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek and WRX lines into a market where North America dominates. A procurement officer should size the company accordingly. Aerospace is a low single-digit share of group turnover, the customer base is overwhelmingly the Japanese government, and overseas defense sales are constrained by Japan's equipment transfer rules rather than by any shortage of capacity. What Subaru offers is a narrow, deep competence in rotary-wing integration, composite and metallic wing structures, and small unmanned systems, sitting inside a company that is otherwise a mass-market carmaker.
