Tata Advanced Systems Limited
Aerostructures, airborne platforms, land mobility, and defense electronics under the Tata Group.
Tata Advanced Systems Limited was set up in 2007 as the Tata Group's dedicated aerospace and defense company, based in Hyderabad and wholly owned by Tata Sons. It grew fast by becoming the preferred Indian manufacturing partner for global primes looking to meet offset obligations and localize production, and it now organizes its work into four segments. Aerostructures and aero-engines is the oldest and largest, running assembly, composites, metallics, and engine centers that build structural sections for both commercial and military aircraft, including empennage components for the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and structures work tied to the F-16/F-21 program. That same segment operates the final assembly lines for the Airbus C295 tactical transport in Vadodara, in partnership with Airbus and as part of the Indian Air Force's replacement of its Avro fleet, and a separate final assembly line for the Airbus H125 light helicopter in Karnataka.
The airborne platforms and systems segment covers unmanned aircraft, mission systems, avionics, and missile-related components, and TASL has developed its own loitering munition and VTOL UAV designs under names like Rakshak and the ALS series, alongside the earlier Sky-I unmanned system. Defense and security is the broadest segment, spanning weapon systems such as rocket and missile launchers and armored subsystems, C4I equipment for air defense, communications, and electronic warfare, radar and sonar sensor systems, optronics, and physical and cybersecurity products, including the long-range Rajak optical observation systems used for coastal and border surveillance. Land mobility rounds out the portfolio with armored and tactical wheeled platforms, most notably the WhAP 8x8 wheeled armored platform and the WhICV infantry combat vehicle variant developed with Kalyani Group, along with lighter vehicles like the LAMV and quick-reaction force vehicles, plus engineering services for vehicle overhaul and life extension. TASL has also built up a substantial personal protective equipment business, having produced several hundred thousand bulletproof jackets and body armor under names like Sarvatra Kavach for Indian security forces.
Across all four segments, the throughline is partnership rather than pure indigenous design. TASL's growth has come largely from becoming the Indian manufacturing arm of choice for Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and other global suppliers navigating India's offset and localization requirements, while simultaneously building out its own weapons, UAV, and vehicle product lines to reduce dependence on any single foreign partner. That dual identity, offset manufacturer and independent product developer at once, has let TASL scale faster than most Indian defense startups while still building the design and systems-engineering muscle it needs to eventually compete for prime contractor roles rather than subcontracted assembly work.
