Teledyne Technologies Incorporated

Imaging sensors, test instruments, marine robotics and RF electronics

//Overview

Teledyne is a holding company that buys engineering businesses and mostly leaves them alone. The original Teledyne was a 1960s conglomerate that assembled and then unwound itself, and the version trading on the New York Stock Exchange as TDY today emerged from that in 1999 and has been acquiring steadily ever since. About 15,800 people work for it, revenue ran 6.12 billion dollars in 2025, and headquarters is a modest office in Thousand Oaks, California rather than a factory. Four segments organise a portfolio that would otherwise be impossible to describe. Digital Imaging is the largest and covers everything that turns photons into data. Instrumentation covers test, measurement and environmental monitoring. Engineered Systems is the government services and specialty manufacturing arm. Aerospace and Defense Electronics covers microwave, radio frequency, relays, interconnects and avionics data.

Digital Imaging is where the defense relevance concentrates, mainly through Teledyne FLIR, bought for 8 billion dollars in 2021 and still the largest acquisition the company has made. FLIR brings uncooled and cooled thermal imaging, the Black Hornet personal reconnaissance nano helicopter carried by dismounted infantry across NATO, the R80D SkyRaider quadcopter, and chemical, biological and radiological detection hardware. Alongside it sit Teledyne e2v, whose image sensors and space qualified devices fly on scientific and military spacecraft, Teledyne DALSA in machine vision and semiconductor foundry work, and the scientific camera businesses Princeton Instruments, Photometrics and Lumenera. Instrumentation runs on a different clock. Teledyne LeCroy builds high end oscilloscopes and protocol analysers, Teledyne ISCO and Teledyne API handle environmental and gas analysis, and the January 2026 purchase of DD-Scientific added electrochemical gas sensors.

Teledyne Marine is a collection rather than a single company and it dominates the underwater instrument market. Webb Research builds the Slocum Glider, the buoyancy driven vehicle that flies ocean transects for weeks without a propeller. Gavia makes modular autonomous underwater vehicles, Benthos covers acoustic modems and flotation, and RD Instruments makes the acoustic Doppler current profilers that most oceanographic ships carry. For navies this is survey, mine countermeasures and anti-submarine environmental work. Engineered Systems is Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, which does missile defense and space systems engineering for the US government and built hardware flown on the International Space Station, alongside energy systems and nuclear instrumentation. Aerospace and Defense Electronics is the least visible and the most embedded, supplying microwave components, relays, interconnects and the avionics data loading and wireless quick access recorder products of Teledyne Controls to aircraft programmes that rarely name their suppliers. Teledyne Optech rounds it out with airborne and terrestrial lidar for mapping.
