Thales has roots going back to Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston in 1893, but it took its current name in 2000 and has since grown into one of Europe's broadest defense and technology conglomerates, partly owned by the French state and by Dassault Aviation, each holding a stake in the mid-to-high 20 percent range. From its headquarters in the La Défense business district of Paris, Thales organizes itself around Defence, Aerospace, Space, Cybersecurity and Digital Identity, and a Public Security and Advanced Technologies grouping that includes artificial intelligence and biometrics research. On the defense side, its ground-based radar family, led by the Ground Master series, covers everything from the compact GM200 multi-mission radar to the long-range GM400, now upgraded with an alpha variant offering roughly five times the processing power and greater detection range for tracking aircraft, missiles, and drones. Thales builds the Watchkeeper unmanned aircraft system used by the British Army for battlefield surveillance, and its missile portfolio, largely developed through its stake in the European missile maker MBDA, includes the Starstreak high-velocity air defense missile and the shorter-range Martlet, both used by UK forces against aerial threats.

Its land vehicles unit produces the Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle and the Hawkei light armored vehicle, both fielded by the Australian Army and exported to several allied militaries, along with the SWARM remote weapon station used across NATO forces. Its naval work includes sonar systems and the Goalkeeper close-in weapon system for last-line ship defense against missiles and aircraft. Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture with Leonardo, extends the group into satellites, Earth observation, navigation payloads, and space exploration hardware, including work on European science and telecommunications missions such as Earth observation constellations and navigation payloads used to augment Europe's Galileo satellite system. On the civil side, Thales remains a major supplier of air traffic management technology and cockpit avionics, and its Cybersecurity and Digital Identity division, built up through acquisitions like Gemalto, provides encryption, identity management, and secure payment technology used by governments and businesses worldwide.

Thales sold its ground transportation signaling business to Hitachi Rail in 2024, narrowing its focus toward defense, aerospace, space, and digital security. The group employs about 83,000 people worldwide, trades on Euronext Paris under the ticker HO as a CAC 40 component, and reported revenue well above 20 billion euros in its most recent fiscal year, with defense and aerospace work making up the bulk of that total, a share that has grown as European governments funnel rearmament spending toward domestic and continental suppliers rather than importing everything from the United States.
