TOKYO KEIKI traces itself to 1896 and Japan's first instrument works, and it has spent the century since turning gyroscopes into products. The company took over gyrocompass manufacturing rights from Sperry in 1918 and still sells the descendants of that line. It is listed in Tokyo under the code 7721, carried the name Tokimec for part of its recent history, and runs five businesses that share sensing, precision machining and control engineering rather than a single end market. Defense and communications equipment is the largest at roughly 42 percent of net sales, followed by marine and port equipment at about 22 percent, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment at about 19 percent, fluid measurement at about 9 percent, and a set of smaller inspection, railway and construction businesses making up the balance.
The defense line is broader than its low profile suggests. For aircraft the company builds radar warning receivers, electronic support measures equipment, radar indicators, gyromagnetic compasses, attitude and heading reference systems, air data computers, accelerometers and aircraft hydraulic equipment. For ships and submarines it supplies inertial navigation systems, gyrocompasses, radar displays, a tactical chart plotter, navigation signal conversion equipment, tactical data display systems and approach angle indicators. Alongside those sit radio frequency components, antennas, an RF signal environment simulator used to rehearse electronic warfare conditions, and bespoke automatic test equipment. The same radar engineering shows up commercially in the SeaKu Ku-band solid state radar sold to vessel traffic services, coast guards and port authorities.
Civil marine work is the public face. The TG-8000 series gyrocompass, in which the gyrosphere hangs in oil on suspension wires, is fitted to large merchant ships, with the TG-8600 variant aimed at high-speed craft, and the PR-9000 autopilot pairs with the company's electronic chart display and information system to form a track control system. Fluid power covers vane pumps, piston pumps, vane motors, valves, manifold blocks and direct drive systems for industrial and construction machinery. Fluid measurement means ultrasonic flowmeters, portable and fixed, plus microwave and radar level gauges sold heavily into Japanese water utilities and agriculture, a replacement-driven market tied to public budgets. The remaining units are quietly dominant in narrow niches. Ultrasonic rail flaw detection equipment is used by more than 70 percent of Japanese railway operators, the P-CAP V6 web inspection system catches print defects on production lines, and inertial sensor technology is repackaged for tunnel boring and road surface measurement. Seismometers and solid state microwave power devices for semiconductor processing come from the same engineering stable. What holds the group together is the gyroscope, the accelerometer and the radar front end, sold under whatever label the end market wants. Defense output goes almost entirely to Japanese services, and the marine and hydraulic lines are where an overseas buyer will find the company already familiar. Anyone assessing Tokyo Keiki as a supplier should expect a mid-sized Japanese manufacturer with deep niche positions, long product lifecycles and an export record built on commercial shipping rather than arms sales.
