Torch Technologies, Inc.
Employee-owned systems engineering, modeling, and simulation for missile defense and Army aviation.
Torch Technologies is a fully employee-owned defense engineering firm built in 2002 by Bill Roark and Don Holder, two veterans of the Huntsville, Alabama defense corridor who set up shop near Redstone Arsenal specifically to serve the Army's Aviation and Missile Command and the Missile Defense Agency next door. The location was deliberate. Huntsville is a center of U.S. Army missile and aviation acquisition, and Torch built its business around the technical, programmatic, and modeling work those programs need but rarely build in-house. Its core work sits in three overlapping disciplines. Systems engineering support covers requirements development, test planning, and technical oversight across weapon system programs from concept through fielding.
Modeling and simulation is arguably the firm's signature capability, building high-fidelity digital models of missile defense systems including Patriot, THAAD, and the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, along with the sensor and command and control architectures that tie them together, and running the simulations that let the government test system performance without a live intercept every time. Information technology and software support rounds out the portfolio, applying to both missile defense and Army aviation programs. The employee ownership structure is unusual for a company this size and is part of how Torch talks about itself. Roark converted the company to an ESOP in 2010, explicitly to cut attrition and keep the workforce invested, and by 2020 it counted more than 1,100 employee-owners. That workforce has grown since, and the firm has expanded well beyond its Huntsville headquarters to additional technical offices in states including Maryland, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Colorado, Michigan, Hawaii, and Florida, tracking the geography of its Missile Defense Agency and Army customers.
Torch has grown quickly on the strength of that focus. It reported roughly 519 million dollars in revenue in 2019, and it has continued winning large task order vehicles since, including contracts totaling close to 2.9 billion dollars in combined ceiling value across several recent awards, plus smaller direct-support contracts like a 17 million dollar Army aviation technical services award. It has been recognized repeatedly among the top 100 U.S. defense contractors by trade rankings that track federal contracting activity. Torch does not manufacture hardware. Its business is entirely the engineering judgment, analysis, and digital modeling that missile defense and aviation programs need to design, test, and field systems responsibly, delivered by a workforce that owns the company doing the work.
