Turkish Aerospace Industries, known locally as TUSAS, was established in 1973 to give Turkey an indigenous aircraft manufacturing capability after decades of relying on foreign suppliers, and it has grown into one of the more ambitious national aerospace programs anywhere in the world. The company organizes around five groups: aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, aerostructures, and space systems, and it has a working, flying product in nearly every one of them, which is unusual for a program this young. On fixed-wing aircraft, TAI's flagship effort is the Kaan, a twin-engine stealth fighter that made its first flight in 2024 and represents Turkey's bid to field a fifth-generation combat aircraft largely on its own terms after being removed from the US-led F-35 program over its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems. Below the Kaan sits the Hürjet, a jet trainer and light attack aircraft that first flew in 2023 and is intended to replace older trainer fleets while also giving TAI export options, and the Hürkuş, a turboprop trainer already in service that first flew in 2013.
In helicopters, TAI builds the T129 ATAK, an attack helicopter derived from the Italian A129 Mangusta but heavily redesigned and now exported to several countries, along with the T625 Gökbey, an indigenously developed utility helicopter that first flew in 2018 and is intended to reduce Turkey's reliance on foreign helicopter platforms for both military and civil roles. TAI's unmanned systems line has become one of the most closely watched parts of the business internationally. The Anka is a medium-altitude, long-endurance surveillance drone that first flew in 2010 and has been exported to multiple countries, the larger twin-engine Aksungur extends that endurance and payload further, and the newer Anka-3 is a flying-wing unmanned combat aircraft designed with reduced radar visibility, first flown in 2023, extending Turkey's drone expertise from the tactical systems that made companies like Baykar famous into a stealthier, more strategic class of aircraft. The aerostructures group manufactures composite and metallic airframe components for both TAI's own platforms and international commercial and military aircraft programs under subcontract.
TAI's space systems group serves as prime integrator for Turkey's national satellite programs, including the Göktürk series of reconnaissance satellites and the Türksat 6A communications satellite, work carried out through the company's Space Systems Integration and Test Center. TAI is majority owned by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, with the country's Defence Industry Agency holding a substantial minority stake and the Turkish Aeronautical Association holding a small remainder, an ownership structure that keeps the company under close state direction. Headquartered outside Ankara with roughly 17,000 employees, TAI has become the clearest example of Turkey's push toward defense industrial self-sufficiency, and its products increasingly show up not just in the Turkish military but in the armed forces of allied and partner nations across the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia.
