//Overview

u-blox is a Swiss fabless semiconductor company that designs positioning and wireless communication chips and modules. It was founded in 1997 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich and works out of Thalwil, on the lake south of Zurich. For most of its life it has been a component supplier to industrial, automotive and consumer manufacturers rather than a defense contractor, and that is still the honest description. What has changed is that GNSS resilience became a defense problem, and u-blox sits on one of the larger installed bases of GNSS receivers anywhere.

The company narrowed sharply in recent years. In January 2025 it announced it would phase out its Cellular business, a unit with more than 200 staff that had been losing money against Chinese module competition. Two areas remain. Locate covers GNSS positioning chips, modules and correction services. Short Range covers Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, a line built partly through the acquisitions of connectBlue and Rigado's Bluetooth business.

The positioning portfolio is organized by platform generation. M10 is the low-power meter-level line, sold in small modules such as the MAX and NEO series parts used for asset tracking and battery-sensitive devices. F9 is the high-precision multi-band generation, with ZED-F9P for centimeter-level RTK, ZED-F9R adding dead reckoning for urban canyons and tunnels, and ZED-F9K in an automotive-grade variant with integrated inertial sensors. F10 introduced dual-frequency parts including the F10T for time and frequency output. Newest is the X20 all-band platform, whose ZED-X20P module gained global precise point positioning and Galileo High Accuracy Service support in 2026, so an integrator can ship decimeter accuracy without depending on a local correction network.

Alongside the silicon there are services. PointPerfect delivers GNSS corrections at roughly three to six centimeters over L-band satellite broadcast or IP, and the Thingstream platform, acquired in 2020, handles delivery and IoT connectivity management.

The defense-relevant piece is resilience. u-blox receivers implement Galileo OSNMA, which cryptographically authenticates the navigation message so a receiver can tell a genuine Galileo signal from a replayed or synthesized one. The company takes hardware to Jammertest in Norway each year to characterize behavior under live jamming and spoofing. That work produced the ZED-R20P, an all-band assured PNT module aimed explicitly at unmanned aircraft systems and security applications, built around a detection and mitigation stack the company calls NavPRISM. It is a component-level contribution to assured PNT rather than a fielded military system, but it is the layer many drone and counter-drone builders actually buy.

Ownership changed hands in 2025. Advent International agreed in August to acquire u-blox for around 1.05 billion Swiss francs, completed the purchase in November, and the remaining publicly held shares were cancelled with the SIX Swiss Exchange listing ending in May 2026. The company employed roughly 850 people going into the transaction, with offices across Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia. It is now privately held under Advent, no longer a listed company, and its business remains predominantly commercial.
