UROVESA

UROVESA, properly URO Vehiculos Especiales S.A., was founded in 1981 by Jose Sierra Fernandez and ten partners in Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia at the far northwest corner of Spain. It began as a builder of heavy off-road trucks for forestry, firefighting and utility work in difficult terrain, and that civil business still runs alongside the military one. The company stayed independent and family-controlled through decades in which most European vehicle makers were absorbed into larger groups, which is part of why its designs are unusually specific to what the Spanish armed forces asked for.

The VAMTAC is the reason anyone outside Spain knows the name. Conceived in the 1990s as a Spanish answer to the American Humvee, the high-mobility tactical vehicle entered service as the Rebeco between 1998 and 2003, was reworked into the I3 and S3 from 2004, and reached its current form with the ST5 from 2013. The ST5 raised load capacity and made room for heavier armour packages and mission equipment, and the ST5 BN3 adds protection to STANAG level 3. A lighter derivative, the VAMTAC LTV, arrived in 2018 for units that want the same family with less weight. Roughly 4,500 VAMTACs are in service across more than twenty countries in around fifty configurations, with Spain operating about 4,000 of them, Morocco 1,200, Iraq 255, Malaysia 103 and Portugal 139 ST5 BN3 vehicles as of 2018. The vehicle turns up as a troop carrier, command post, ambulance, weapon carrier, missile launcher platform, artillery tractor and reconnaissance vehicle. Mechanically it is conventional and deliberately so, with a Steyr turbocharged diesel of around 245 horsepower, a length near 4.85 metres and an operating range beyond 600 kilometres, numbers chosen so that a unit can drive it a long way without a fuel bowser following.

The SK line extends the VAMTAC idea upward into light trucks. The SK95 was presented as a light artillery tractor for the Spanish Army, giving batteries a vehicle that shares parts and training with the 4x4 fleet while pulling and carrying more. Alongside the tactical range sits the TT URO family of off-road trucks, built in both all-wheel-drive configurations for rough ground and an urban variant for municipal and industrial customers, and these underpin firefighting appliances, tanker bodies, resupply vehicles and specialist utility work.

What holds the two halves of the business together is a way of building. UROVESA designs the chassis, cab and driveline and then works with body builders and system integrators to mount whatever a customer needs on top, so a firefighting pump, a missile launcher and a field ambulance can share the same running gear, spares and maintenance regime. That matters more to an army than horsepower figures. The company also handles armouring, in-service upgrades and fleet support for delivered vehicles, and the long production runs for Spain mean it has kept a domestic industrial base for light tactical vehicles that many comparable European countries no longer possess.
