//Overview

Velo3D was founded in 2014 by Benny Buller around a specific technical bet: that if the melt process were controlled tightly enough, metal powder bed fusion could build overhangs and internal channels without support structures. Supports are the hidden cost of metal printing, because someone has to machine or grind them off, and geometries that need them in awkward places simply cannot be built. Removing that constraint is what let the company print closed impellers, integrated manifolds and long internal passages that would otherwise be assemblies.

The hardware is the Sapphire family, comprising Sapphire, Sapphire 1MZ, Sapphire XC and Sapphire XC 1MZ, capable of parts up to 600 mm in diameter and a metre tall. The machines are wrapped in software that is arguably the more distinctive asset. Flow takes a CAD model, analyses its geometry and generates a print strategy without the usual manual fixing. Assure handles in-process quality data and part-to-part repeatability. Intelligent Fusion is the underlying process control layer that ties the two together. The company also distributes Golden Print Files so that a qualified part prints identically wherever it is made.

The corporate history has been turbulent. Velo3D went public through a SPAC, was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in September 2024 for failing continued listing standards, and traded over the counter before returning to Nasdaq under the ticker VELO. In late 2024 and early 2025 it restructured, cancelling roughly 22.4 million dollars of senior secured notes in exchange for new shares. That left Arrayed Notes Acquisition Corp, part of Arrayed Additive, holding about 95 percent of the equity, and Arrayed chief executive Arun Jeldi took over as chief executive of Velo3D. Arrayed itself works on lightweight magnesium and aluminum additive technologies for aerospace and defense. Headcount is small, around 130 people, based in Fremont, California.

Since the restructuring the company has reoriented hard toward US defense work, and the contract record backs that up. In February 2026 it took an 11.5 million dollar full-rate production agreement from a US defense prime for a national security program. It secured a 32.6 million dollar Department of War award through the Defense Innovation Unit for Project FORGE, the Foundry for Operational Readiness and Global Effects, working with the US Navy and an industry prime to prototype and qualify additive parts that remove a manufacturing bottleneck on a weapon system, with an option to develop the largest laser powder bed printing capability in the country. In March 2026 it won a 9.8 million dollar five-year IDIQ supporting the Defense Logistics Agency JAMA pilot parts program.

Commercially it now sells three ways: outright machine purchase, a zero capital model where Velo3D prints the parts, and a hybrid arrangement using its certified partner network for surge capacity. It holds AS9100D certification and is ITAR registered, and it stresses that all Sapphire systems are designed and assembled domestically, which is the argument that carries most weight with US government buyers. Earlier customers include SpaceX, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Lockheed Martin, Avio and General Motors.
