Weibel Scientific is a family-owned Danish radar manufacturer at Allerod, north of Copenhagen. The business traces to M. P. Weibel in 1936 and took its present form in 1977, and it has spent nearly fifty years on one narrow technical problem: measuring and tracking small, fast, free-flying objects with continuous wave Doppler radar. Around 300 people work there, most of them at the Allerod site, and the company reports more than 600 radars delivered across 40 or more countries.
The technology base is X-band continuous wave and frequency modulated continuous wave radar with heavy Doppler processing. That approach gives very fine velocity resolution and unusually good performance against low radar cross-section targets, which is why the same core design serves markets that look unrelated on paper. In instrumentation, Weibel radars sit on test ranges measuring projectile, artillery, rocket and drone velocity and trajectory, work that ammunition manufacturers and proving grounds depend on for qualification data. The MVRS series handles muzzle velocity measurement directly at the gun. The SL series of fixed head radars and the MSL and MFTR series of tracking radars cover the longer range instrumentation and test range work.
Air defence has become the commercial centre of gravity. The XENTA family is built for very short range and short range ground-based air defence and for counter-drone work. XENTA-M5 is a frequency modulated continuous wave X-band radar with a nominal 75 km instrumented range and 60 degrees of elevation coverage, able to detect, track and classify both fast movers and the low, slow and small targets that conventional air surveillance radar struggles with. The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation ordered four XENTA-M5 systems for the Royal Danish Army with first delivery scheduled for late 2027, and those sets are to be mounted on Rheinmetall all-terrain vehicles and tied into a Terma command and control system.
The larger commercial story of the past two years has been Weibel selling through other primes rather than only direct to ministries. In May 2025 Kongsberg placed what Weibel described as its largest order ever for XENTA radars supporting short range air defence, and Thales has separately placed a large XENTA short range radar order. That positions a company of a few hundred people as the radar of choice inside air defence systems marketed by much larger European integrators.
Ballistic missile defence and space round out the portfolio. Long range tracking radars feed missile defence test and evaluation, and the same class of system is used to detect, classify and track spacecraft, satellites and orbital debris. NASA has been a long-standing customer, using Weibel radars for debris detection work. A service organisation covering maintenance, repair, upgrade and customer support sits behind all of it, which matters for instrumentation radars that stay on a range for decades and get refreshed rather than replaced. Weibel remains privately held by the Munkholm family, which is unusual for a supplier now embedded in several national air defence programmes, and it has kept development and production concentrated at the Allerod site rather than spreading them across low-cost locations.
