Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze Nr 2 has been repairing Polish military aircraft since 1945, when it began as mobile field workshops before settling permanently in Bydgoszcz. The name changed several times on the way. The current one dates from 1983, commercialisation by the Ministry of National Defence followed in 2008, and in January 2020 the plant absorbed WZL Nr 4 in Warsaw, giving the merged company roughly 1,400 staff across two sites. It belongs to Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and describes itself as one of the largest aviation plants in Poland.
Military aviation is the core, and the fleet list is the argument for the company's existence. WZL-2 overhauls the Polish Air Force MiG-29, having modernised sixteen aircraft between 2011 and 2014, works the Su-22 through structural repair and service life extension, maintains C-130 Hercules transports in a 7,800 square metre hangar completed in 2016 for large aircraft, and carries out depot-level airframe maintenance on the F-16 including work performed for the United States Air Force. Civil aviation is smaller but real, covering Cessna, Piper and Cirrus types. The work itself runs from full airframe overhaul with verification, repair and painting through periodic inspections and emergency repairs to component verification.
Behind the airframes sits a set of process shops the plant sells in their own right. There is a military paint shop and a separate civil paint shop, an electroplating shop for galvanic coating and chemical processing, plasma spraying, non-destructive testing, mechanical services built on CNC machining centres and automated lines, and a jet engine test center used for jet, turbine and starting engines. Unmanned aerial vehicle systems are the newest segment and the one the plant is now judged on. ORLIK is the short range tactical class platform, a 150 kg aircraft with day and night electro-optics and synthetic aperture radar, roughly 100 km operating radius and six hours of endurance, with eight sets due to the Polish Armed Forces by the end of 2027. WIZJER is the 13 kg mini class system built in a consortium with other PGZ plants, flying about three hours at up to 120 km per hour with automatic parachute recovery. DragonFly is a 5 kg vertical take-off loitering munition offered with anti-tank, thermobaric and high explosive warheads, and its path through military testing has been slower than the plant hoped. Mobile teams handle inspection, maintenance and repair of unmanned systems in the field, with spare parts supply run from Bydgoszcz. Other services fill the gaps that the named shops leave. The drone programmes have drawn scrutiny. A parliamentary inspection in 2025 raised questions about the plant's finances and about whether the unmanned lines will carry it, and Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa has said in public that ORLIK and WIZJER are progressing to plan and that the future of the plants is not in doubt. What the company sells underneath that argument has not changed much in eighty years, which is the ability to take a military aircraft apart, inspect every part of it, put it back together and certify the result.
