Airframe

The airframe is the aircraft's structure: fuselage, wings, tail, landing gear, and the skin over all of it. Not the engines, not the radar, not the wiring. When an engineer says a design has "good bones," the airframe is the bones, and it determines most of what the aircraft can ever become, how much it lifts, how hard it turns, how visible it is to radar, and how many decades it survives.

Survival is counted in hours. Every airframe has a fatigue life, the number of flight hours the structure can absorb before cracking risk becomes unacceptable, and the number depends on how the hours are flown. A B-52 cruising gently has lasted since the 1960s and is scheduled to fly into the 2050s, a century after design. Fighters pulling 9g eat their structural life at a rate measured in single-digit thousands of hours, which is why an F-16's service life extension is a structural surgery program, replacing bulkheads, not a paint job.

Materials moved the trade-offs

Aluminum dominated from the 1930s because it is light, cheap, and forgiving. Titanium bought heat resistance for supersonic jets at a brutal machining cost, most famously in the SR-71, whose titanium the CIA sourced covertly from the Soviet Union. The modern shift is composites. Carbon-fiber structures make up about 35 percent of the F-35's structural weight and roughly half of a Boeing 787's, cutting weight and corrosion while enabling the smooth, continuous shapes stealth demands. The price is manufacturing complexity and repairs that need autoclaves and engineers rather than a sheet-metal shop.

Stealth turned the airframe into part of the sensor fight. A low-observable aircraft's shape does most of the radar-cross-section work, which is why the F-117's facets and the B-2's flying wing look the way they do, and why every dent, gap, and fastener on a stealth jet is a maintenance item.

Why do airframes outlive their original roles?

Because structure ages slower than electronics. It is routine to re-engine and re-sensor a sound airframe two or three times. The KC-135 tanker flies on a 1950s structure with modern engines and avionics, and the B-52 is on its second re-engining. For manufacturers this is the aftermarket: structural inspections, life-extension kits, and modernization contracts often outrun the value of the original sale.
