Blue Force Tracking

Blue force tracking is the system that shows a commander where friendly forces are in real time. Each vehicle carries a GPS receiver and a transmitter that reports its position over a network, and the positions render as blue icons on a shared map, blue being the NATO color for friendly, red for enemy. The purpose is unglamorous and life-saving: know where your own people are, so you do not shoot them and do not send them into each other.

Why it exists

Fratricide drove the whole program. The 1991 Gulf War, fought partly at night in featureless desert against an enemy using similar Soviet-supplied equipment, produced a painful share of friendly-fire casualties, roughly a quarter of US combat deaths by later accounting. The lesson was blunt: in fast, confused, low-visibility fighting, the hardest question is often not where the enemy is but where your own forward units are. The US Army fielded Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below, FBCB2, with satellite tracking in time for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and commanders could watch their spearhead advance on a live map for the first time. Fratricide dropped, though it never reached zero, since not every platform and not every coalition partner carried compatible gear.

The capability spread and shrank. What needed a vehicle-mounted terminal now runs on ruggedized tablets and Android devices, the US Army's Nett Warrior program putting a version in an infantry leader's hands. The same architecture, position plus a data radio, also carries messages, orders, and the enemy picture, so blue force tracking became the on-ramp to broader battlefield networking rather than a standalone gadget.

The vulnerability

Two weaknesses are permanent. The system depends on GPS, which adversaries jam and spoof, and on a data link, which they can jam or exploit, so a force that leans on blue force tracking must plan for fighting without it. Ukraine reinforced the point from both directions, benefiting from friendly tracking while operating in the most intense GPS-denial environment any modern army has faced. And there is a counterintelligence edge: a captured or compromised tracker hands the enemy your friendly picture, which is why the data is encrypted and why losing a terminal triggers a security response.

Who supplies it?

Traditional integrators built the early vehicle systems, and the market broadened as the hardware commoditized onto tablets and phones. The durable value migrated to software, the mapping, the secure messaging, the fusion of friendly and enemy tracks, and to assured positioning, since anti-jam GPS and alternative navigation are exactly what a tracking system needs when the satellites are contested.
