Breaching
Breaching is forcing a passage through an obstacle the enemy built to stop you: minefields, wire, anti-tank ditches, walls, or a locked door. It exists at two scales that share a word and a logic. Combat engineers breach fortified lines for armies. Assault teams breach doors for room entries. In both, the breach is the most dangerous moment of the operation, because the obstacle exists precisely to hold you still in a place where weapons are aimed.
The engineering scale
Deliberate obstacle belts are designed as systems: mines to stop movement, wire and ditches to slow it, all covered by artillery and anti-tank fire registered on the likely breach points. Getting through takes a combined-arms choreography doctrine calls SOSRA, suppress the defenders, obscure with smoke, secure the near side, reduce the obstacle, assault through. The reduction toolkit is specialized: mine-clearing line charges that blast a lane with a rocket-thrown rope of explosive, plow and roller tanks, armored engineer vehicles, and bridging for the ditches and streams.
Ukraine's 2023 summer offensive re-taught the subject at painful cost. Russian defenses in the south stacked minefields hundreds of meters deep behind ditches and dragon's-teeth, under drone observation and artillery, and Ukrainian breaching attempts lost Western-supplied engineer vehicles and armor in the first hours. The offensive slowed to infantry pace. The lesson was not that breaching is impossible but that it fails without the full suppression package, above all air superiority and counter-battery dominance, which Ukraine did not have. Every NATO engineer school has been rewriting coursework around that campaign since.
The door scale
Tactical breaching, military and police, is its own craft: mechanical with rams and hydraulic spreaders, ballistic with shotgun breaching rounds, thermal with cutting torches, and explosive with precisely calculated charges that defeat the door without leveling the room behind it. Explosive breaching in particular is a certified specialty, since the difference between a breach and a casualty event is arithmetic.
Where is the market?
Combat engineering equipment concentrates at firms like Pearson Engineering, whose plows and rollers bolt onto most Western tanks, plus the armored engineer vehicle lines of the big land primes and the line-charge and demolition energetics makers. Renewed NATO attention to obstacle warfare after 2023 is pulling money into the whole category, including remotely operated and robotic breaching, on the sound theory that the most exposed job on the battlefield is best given to something without a family.
