CBRN
CBRN stands for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear, the four categories of unconventional threat that share almost nothing except the demand for specialized protection. The acronym replaced the older NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) mainly to add the R, radiological, which covers the dirty bomb: conventional explosive spreading radioactive material to contaminate rather than to blast. Grouping four very different hazards under one label makes sense operationally, because the soldier's response, detect, protect, decontaminate, is broadly common even when the physics is not.
Four different problems
Chemical agents, nerve agents like sarin and VX, blister agents like mustard, act fast and locally, and the response is masks, protective suits, and antidotes like atropine auto-injectors. Syria's use of sarin and chlorine in the 2010s kept the threat contemporary. Biological threats overlap with biodefense, slow-acting, invisible, potentially self-spreading, and the hardest to detect at the point of attack. Radiological hazards are contamination without a nuclear explosion, the dirty-bomb scenario, more an area-denial and panic weapon than a mass-casualty one. Nuclear is its own universe of blast, thermal, and radiation effects at a scale the other three do not approach.
The shared discipline is a rhythm every affected soldier drills: detect the agent, mask and suit up (MOPP levels in US usage grade how much protective posture to assume), avoid or cross contaminated ground under control, and decontaminate people and equipment afterward. Fighting in full protective gear, hot, clumsy, exhausting, degrades a unit's effectiveness by itself, which is part of the point of a CBRN threat: even unused, it forces a costly posture.
Why it stays funded
CBRN sits at a strange intersection of low probability and catastrophic consequence, which keeps steady money flowing into a capability mostly never used in anger. Russia's nerve-agent assassinations (Novichok, in Salisbury in 2018 and against Navalny), Syria's chemical attacks, and the standing worry about a terrorist dirty bomb keep the field from lapsing. Ukraine added nuclear-plant risk to the list when fighting reached the Zaporizhzhia facility. The threat rarely materializes at scale, and the cost of being unprepared if it does is precisely why nobody stops paying.
What does the CBRN market include?
Detection is the technology-dense core: chemical agent detectors, biological samplers and identifiers, and radiation instruments, from personal dosimeters to vehicle-mounted survey systems. Around it sit protection (masks, filters, suits, collective-protection shelters that keep a building's air clean), decontamination equipment and chemistry, and medical countermeasures. Specialist firms like Smiths Detection, Bruker, and Avon Protection anchor the market, with a wide base of filter, sensor, and reagent suppliers, and demand that rises with every headline and never fully recedes.
