Circuit Board

A circuit board, or printed circuit board, is the rigid or flexible substrate that holds and connects electronic components, the physical foundation of every radar, radio, missile seeker, and flight computer in a military. In consumer electronics it is a commodity. In defense it is a controlled, certified, and occasionally strategic item, and the reasons why illuminate a lot about how defense hardware differs from the phone in your pocket.

Why a milspec board costs ten times a commercial one

Environment first. A board in a missile experiences shock, vibration, temperature swings from Arctic to desert, and sometimes hard radiation, so defense PCBs use higher-temperature materials, thicker copper, and construction rated to standards like IPC Class 3, the highest reliability tier, where a commercial gadget uses Class 1 or 2. They are conformally coated against moisture and salt, tested far more exhaustively, and expected to work for decades, not years. A phone board that fails is an annoyance. A board in a flight control computer that fails is a crash.

Then provenance. Because a compromised board can hide a backdoor or a sabotaged component, defense supply chains increasingly demand trusted sourcing: fabrication in accredited facilities, documented chain of custody, and authentication against counterfeits. The counterfeit-parts problem is real and serious, remarked and relabeled chips have reached defense inventories through gray-market brokers, prompting the US trusted-foundry and trusted-supplier programs and a body of DFARS rules on parts authentication. Where a board and its chips were actually made has become a security question, not just a cost one, and the concentration of advanced board and chip fabrication in Asia is a strategic worry that domestic-production initiatives are trying to address.

The obsolescence squeeze

Defense systems outlive commercial component lifecycles by decades, which creates a chronic problem: the chip a 1990s board was designed around is no longer manufactured, and neither is the board. Diminishing manufacturing sources drives a whole sustainment industry of last-time buys, board redesigns, and reverse-engineering to keep 30-year-old systems alive, and it is one of the quieter, steadier revenue streams in defense electronics.

Where do smaller suppliers fit?

The PCB supply chain is deep and specialized: fabrication houses with milspec and trusted-supplier accreditation, assembly shops with the certifications and clearances defense work requires, and test and inspection specialists. Accreditation is the moat, IPC Class 3, AS9100, ITAR registration, trusted-supplier status, and a shop that carries it can win defense work that pure price competition would never open, because in this market the customer is buying documented reliability and provenance as much as the board itself.
