Cruise Missile
A cruise missile is essentially a small, unmanned, one-way jet aircraft carrying a warhead. Unlike a ballistic missile, which arcs up into space and falls on its target, a cruise missile flies the whole way like a plane, powered by a jet engine, staying low, following a guided path, and steering to its target with precision. That flight profile defines everything about it: slower than a ballistic missile, taking many minutes or hours to arrive, but flying low enough to hide under radar horizons and accurately enough to hit a specific building, which is why cruise missiles open nearly every modern strike campaign.
How they fly and why they hide
The cruise missile's great advantage is that it flies low, hugging terrain and skimming the sea, which keeps it below the radar horizon of defenders until very late, when it suddenly appears close and fast. Guidance evolved from terrain-matching systems that compared the ground below to stored maps, to GPS and inertial navigation with terminal seekers that recognize the target, giving modern cruise missiles the accuracy to strike within meters of an aim point. The US Tomahawk is the archetype, launched from ships and submarines, flying hundreds of miles at low altitude to hit precise targets, and it has opened American strike operations since 1991, the first weapons in, clearing the way for aircraft by hitting air defenses and command centers before crewed planes are risked. Russia's Kalibr and Kh-101, and a growing array of Chinese and other systems, do the same job, and Ukraine has been on the receiving end of thousands of cruise-missile strikes while striking back with its own and with donated systems like Storm Shadow.
Cruise missiles come in many forms, air-launched, sea-launched, ground-launched, subsonic and supersonic, conventional and nuclear, and the family keeps growing as the technology spreads and cheapens. At the low end, the line between a cheap cruise missile and a long-range one-way attack drone has blurred almost to nothing, with weapons like the Iranian Shahed occupying exactly that gray zone, slow and cheap but numerous, and used in swarms to overwhelm defenses.
The defense problem they pose
Cruise missiles are hard to defend against precisely because they fly low and can come from any direction. Their low altitude means defenders detect them late, and defeating them requires low-altitude radar coverage, aircraft or missiles positioned to intercept, and the reaction time to engage a target that appeared with little warning. Because they can be launched in salvos and mixed with ballistic missiles and drones, a coordinated attack forces defenders to solve several different problems at once, ballistic missiles arriving fast and steep, cruise missiles arriving low and from unexpected bearings, drones arriving cheap and numerous, and the combined salvo is now the standard offensive package precisely because no single defense handles all of it. Defending against cruise missiles is one of the harder and less-solved problems in air defense, especially over the large areas and long coastlines that make comprehensive low-altitude coverage expensive.
How is a cruise missile different from a ballistic missile?
They are almost opposites in how they fly, which is exactly why arsenals hold both. A ballistic missile is powered only briefly, then arcs high into or above the atmosphere and plunges down at enormous speed, arriving in minutes and very hard to stop but on a relatively predictable path. A cruise missile is powered the whole way, flying low and slow and maneuvering, taking far longer to arrive but hiding under radar and coming from unexpected directions. Defenders must therefore solve two entirely different problems, and an attacker who launches both at once forces them to do so simultaneously, which is the whole point of the combined strike.
