Friction

Friction, in the military sense, is the accumulation of countless small difficulties, delays, mistakes, and uncertainties that make even the simplest things hard to accomplish in war. The concept comes from Carl von Clausewitz, the Prussian theorist whose early nineteenth-century work On War remains the deepest meditation on the nature of armed conflict, and his insight was that war looks simple in theory but is enormously difficult in practice, because everything in war is made harder by the friction of reality, the fatigue, fear, confusion, bad weather, broken equipment, garbled orders, and sheer chance that grind against every plan and every action. Clausewitz wrote that in war everything is very simple, but the simplest thing is difficult, and that these difficulties accumulate to produce a friction that no one who has not experienced war can properly imagine, and this idea, that friction is inherent to war and that it degrades every effort, has proven one of the most enduring and important concepts in military thought.

Why friction is inescapable

Friction arises because war is conducted by tired, frightened, imperfect human beings using complex, fallible equipment in a chaotic and dangerous environment against an enemy actively trying to thwart them, and all of these introduce difficulty and error into everything that is attempted. A plan that is clear and simple on paper meets a reality where the map is wrong, the weather turns, the radio fails, a unit gets lost, an order is misunderstood, the enemy does something unexpected, troops are exhausted and afraid, and a hundred small things go wrong, each seemingly minor but collectively transforming a straightforward task into a struggle. The march that should take a few hours takes all day because of a broken bridge, a traffic jam, and a wrong turn. The attack that should be coordinated falls apart because one unit is late, another is in the wrong place, and communications fail at the critical moment. The famous observation that no plan survives contact with the enemy is an expression of friction, the recognition that the friction of combat will inevitably disrupt even the best plan, so that what actually happens diverges from what was intended in ways that cannot be fully predicted or prevented. Friction is not a sign of incompetence, though incompetence adds to it, but an inherent property of war itself, present even in well-run operations by capable forces, because the fundamental conditions of war, danger, exertion, uncertainty, and chance, generate it unavoidably.

Understanding friction has profound practical implications for how war is conducted, because a commander who understands friction plans and leads differently from one who does not. Recognizing that friction will degrade every effort, good commanders build in margins, keep plans simple and robust rather than intricate and fragile, since complex plans have more parts to go wrong and generate more friction, maintain reserves to deal with the unexpected, and cultivate the initiative and adaptability in subordinates that allow a force to keep functioning when the plan breaks down and orders cannot get through. The doctrine of mission command, telling subordinates what to achieve rather than exactly how, is in large part a response to friction, since it lets subordinates adapt to the friction they encounter on the ground rather than waiting for orders that friction may prevent from arriving, keeping the force effective amid the chaos. Training, too, is partly about reducing friction, since well-trained troops make fewer mistakes, recover faster from confusion, and function better under stress, so that a professional force generates and suffers less friction than a poorly trained one, which is one reason training is such a powerful force multiplier. The side that manages friction better, generating less of it in its own operations while imposing more on the enemy, gains a real advantage, and much of the art of command lies in this management of the inescapable difficulty of war.

Friction in modern war

Modern technology has changed the character of friction without eliminating it, and in some ways has both reduced and increased it. Better communications, navigation, and information systems can reduce certain frictions, since GPS means units get lost less often, good communications mean orders are less likely to be garbled, and shared situational awareness reduces the confusion of not knowing where friendly and enemy forces are. But technology introduces new frictions of its own, since complex systems fail in complex ways, dependence on networks creates vulnerability when those networks are jammed or hacked, and the very information systems meant to reduce uncertainty can overwhelm commanders with more data than they can process or feed them false confidence in a picture that is stale or wrong. The war in Ukraine has displayed friction abundantly, from the Russian columns that bogged down in 2022 amid logistical breakdown and confusion, a spectacular demonstration of friction overwhelming a poorly prepared force, to the constant difficulties both sides face in coordinating complex operations under the disruption of electronic warfare, drone observation, and precision fires. Clausewitz's insight endures because friction is rooted not in the technology of any particular era but in the fundamental nature of war as a violent, uncertain, human endeavor conducted against a hostile will, and no amount of technology has made war the simple, frictionless execution of plans that it appears to be in theory, so the concept of friction remains as essential to understanding war today as when Clausewitz first articulated it two centuries ago.

How is friction different from the fog of war?

The two concepts are closely related and both come from Clausewitz, but they emphasize different aspects of war's difficulty. The fog of war refers specifically to the uncertainty and incomplete information that pervades war, the commander's inability to know clearly what is happening, where the enemy is, what they intend, even what one's own forces are doing, so the fog is about not knowing, the murk of uncertainty that obscures the situation. Friction is the broader concept, encompassing not just uncertainty but all the difficulties that impede action in war, the delays, breakdowns, mistakes, exhaustion, and chance that make everything harder, so friction includes the fog of war, uncertainty being one major source of friction, but extends beyond it to the physical and human difficulties of actually doing things in war. In practice the two work together, since the fog of war, the uncertainty about the situation, is itself a major cause of friction, the difficulty of acting effectively, as commanders who cannot see clearly make mistakes, hesitate, and misdirect their forces, generating the delays and errors that constitute friction. Together, friction and the fog of war capture Clausewitz's central insight that war is far harder in practice than in theory, difficult both because you cannot know clearly what is happening, the fog, and because countless obstacles impede everything you try to do, the friction, and this combination of uncertainty and difficulty is what makes war the demanding, unpredictable endeavor it is, defeating the neat plans and clear expectations that look so achievable before the fighting starts.
