Barrett Firearms Manufacturing

Anti-materiel and precision rifles, suppressors, ammunition and training.

//Overview

Barrett Firearms Manufacturing exists because a photographer in Tennessee wanted a shoulder-fired .50 calibre rifle and could not buy one. Ronnie Barrett started the company in 1982 in Murfreesboro, built the semi-automatic Model 82 around the .50 BMG cartridge, and created a category of weapon that armies now treat as standard equipment. The US Army fields the design as the M107 long-range sniper rifle. Ownership changed in January 2023, when the Australian family-owned munitions group NIOA bought 100 percent of the company and kept it running under its own name and management in Murfreesboro, with Ronnie and Chris Barrett staying on as executive advisers.

The rifle range splits along two lines. Semi-automatic products cover the Model 82A1 and the improved M107A1, the single-shot Model 99 in .50 BMG and .416 Barrett, and the gas-operated REC7 DI and REC10 in intermediate and 7.62mm calibres. The bolt-action side is built around the Multi-Role Adaptive Design rifle, a chassis system that lets a user swap barrels and change calibre in the field. That capability won the company its most consequential contracts. US Special Operations Command awarded Barrett close to 50 million dollars in March 2019 for the Advanced Sniper Rifle, and the Army followed in April 2021 with a five-year Precision Sniper Rifle contract for roughly 2,800 rifles designated the MK 22 MOD 0. The MK 22 converts between 7.62x51mm NATO, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum with a barrel change, so one rifle covers what previously took three. Variants including the MRAD SMR, the MRAD Covert and the extended-range MRAD ELR broadened the line for police marksmen and long-range competitors.

Around the rifles sits a supporting catalogue. Barrett makes its own suppressors and loads its own ammunition, including the .416 Barrett cartridge it developed when it needed a round the Model 99 could push further than .50 BMG. Optics and mounting hardware are part of the business too, covering scope rings and rails cut to the loads a heavy rifle generates. Instruction rounds it out. The company runs long-range shooting courses and armorer-level maintenance training at the Murfreesboro factory and at venues elsewhere in the country, aimed at the military and police units that carry the rifles. A licensed products line puts the Barrett name on branded goods.

Civilian sales are real and substantial. Competition shooters and collectors buy the same .50 calibre rifles issued to soldiers, which is why the company has been at the centre of American arguments over civilian access to anti-materiel weapons for three decades. Barrett holds ISO 9001:2015 certification for its manufacturing. NIOA sells and distributes ammunition and weapons to Australian and allied forces, so the acquisition handed Barrett a route into markets its own sales team had covered thinly, while giving the Australian group a manufacturing asset inside the United States. Both sides described the deal as a fit between two family businesses.
