General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag

Swiss builder of the Piranha, Eagle, DURO and Merlin wheeled vehicles

//Overview

Mowag was founded at Kreuzlingen on Lake Constance in 1950 by the engineer Walter Ruf, and its first success was mundane: more than 1,600 T1 four-wheel-drive troop carriers for the Swiss Army, followed by orders from German border units. Ownership moved twice in quick succession. General Motors Canada bought the firm in 1999, General Dynamics acquired that business in 2003, and from 2004 the Swiss plant traded as part of General Dynamics European Land Systems, formally renamed General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag GmbH in 2010. It remains a Swiss-incorporated company with roughly 800 staff across Kreuzlingen, Ermatingen and Tagerwilen. More than 12,000 of its armoured wheeled vehicles are in service worldwide.

The Piranha is the vehicle that made the name. Begun in the 1970s and now in its fourth and fifth generations, it is a modular wheeled armoured family built in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10 drivelines, carrying everything from infantry sections and mortars to command posts, ambulances and turreted direct-fire variants. Piranha IV serves the Swiss Army. Piranha V, the heavier and better-protected generation, went to Denmark and has been assembled under licence in Romania, and the design has been sold or licence-built in more than twenty countries over five decades, including versions produced in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom under other names. Payload growth and internal volume are the usual arguments for it, since customers keep adding armour, jammers and remote weapon stations to hulls bought years earlier.

The Eagle occupies the lighter end. It began as a reconnaissance and command vehicle on a commercial chassis and grew into the Eagle V, a 4x4 and 6x6 protected patrol vehicle unveiled at Eurosatory in 2010 and bought in quantity by Germany, Switzerland and Denmark for reconnaissance, ambulance, command and joint fire support roles. DURO covers protected logistics and troop transport, a high-mobility three-axle truck whose armoured derivative serves the Bundeswehr as the Yak, and an electric hybrid variant, the DURO-e, was shown at Eurosatory 2022. Alongside it that year came the Merlin, a light tactical 4x4 aimed at airborne, special forces and light infantry users, engineered on the same template as the Eagle V but with a new powertrain and lower weight.

Beyond building vehicles, the Kreuzlingen operation carries out design authority work, mid-life upgrades, protection retrofits and integration of turrets, remote weapon stations and mission systems onto its own hulls and onto vehicles sold long ago. Fleet support, spares and technical documentation for operators across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America form a steady part of the business, and the company acts as the group's centre of competence for wheeled armoured vehicle design within the wider General Dynamics European Land Systems structure, which also holds tracked vehicle and bridging businesses in Spain, Germany and Austria.
