General Dynamics

General Dynamics operates as four largely independent businesses that happen to share a corporate parent, and understanding the company means understanding each one separately rather than looking for a common thread. Marine Systems is the most strategically sensitive: General Dynamics Electric Boat builds the US Navy's nuclear-powered submarines, currently juggling two of the largest shipbuilding programs in the country at once, the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine meant to carry the sea-based leg of the nuclear deterrent into the 2080s, and continued production of Virginia-class fast attack submarines. Bath Iron Works, also under Marine Systems, has built Arleigh Burke-class destroyers for the Navy for decades and remains one of only two yards still producing them. Combat Systems makes armored vehicles, and it is genuinely global in scope.

In the US this means the M1 Abrams tank and the wheeled Stryker family. In Europe, through General Dynamics European Land Systems, it means the ASCOD tracked vehicle family, sold to Spain as the Pizarro and Austria as the Ulan, and adapted for the UK Army as the Ajax family of reconnaissance and support vehicles, along with the Piranha and Pandur wheeled vehicle lines used across multiple NATO militaries. Aerospace is Gulfstream, the business jet maker behind aircraft like the G700 and G800, a business with essentially no overlap with the rest of General Dynamics beyond sharing its balance sheet, though Gulfstream airframes do get adapted into military special-mission aircraft. Technologies is the fourth leg and the least visible to the public, covering GDIT's federal IT and cloud services work alongside General Dynamics Mission Systems, which builds tactical communications, cybersecurity, and encryption equipment used across the other three businesses' platforms and far beyond them.

The four units rarely cross paths operationally, a submarine engineer at Electric Boat and a Gulfstream avionics technician work in genuinely different industries, but the corporate structure lets General Dynamics move capital and management talent to whichever business has the biggest program on its plate, which in recent years has clearly been Marine Systems given the scale of Columbia and Virginia-class construction. The company traces its roots to 1952 and has been reshaped repeatedly since through acquisitions and divestitures, including the sale of its former IT services unit and the 1999 exit from most legacy commercial aerospace lines outside Gulfstream. General Dynamics employs well over 10,000 people, trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and remains one of the few US primes with a genuine submarine-building monopoly alongside Huntington Ingalls' Newport News yard.
