GKN Aerospace is the whole of Melrose Industries. After the 2018 takeover of GKN and the 2023 demerger of the automotive and powder metallurgy businesses into Dowlais, Melrose kept one operating company and became a pure aerospace group of roughly 16,000 people. The business is organised around two poles. Airframes covers aerostructures, electrical wiring interconnection systems, cockpit and cabin transparencies and ice protection. Engines covers engine structures, rotating and static components, and a growing aftermarket in repair and lifecycle support. Both sell into civil and military customers from plants across the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States and Asia.
The Airframes work is where most of the defence visibility sits. GKN Aerospace designs and builds the canopy and transparencies for the F-35 Lightning II, and it has produced the wiring harness packages for the F-35 fleet in production and in service. A separate multi year contract with BAE Systems keeps Eurofighter Typhoon transparency production running at the Luton plant to the end of 2030. Structural work spans the Airbus A400M Atlas military transport as well as the civil programmes that carry the volume, among them the Airbus A350 XWB and Boeing 787. The same division makes electro thermal and bleed air ice protection systems and holds niche positions in composite fuselage work, including the structure for the HondaJet and components for the Bell 525.
Engines is the smaller division by headcount and the one with the better margin. GKN Aerospace supplies structural castings, fabrications and rotating parts into major engine programmes and holds a long standing position in Sweden supporting the RM12 engine that powers the Gripen C and D, covering availability and airworthiness across the fleet rather than just parts supply. The repair side has expanded steadily, including a multi year Rolls-Royce engine repair agreement and work on Trent 700 fan blades. Additive manufacture and large scale laser metal deposition are being pushed into engine structures to cut buy to fly ratios on titanium parts.
The group also runs global technology centres in Bristol, Trollhattan and the Netherlands working on electrical propulsion, hydrogen systems and advanced materials, which is where Melrose has directed a good deal of the research spend. GKN Fokker, the Dutch business acquired in 2015, is listed separately in this directory and its specific product lines are covered there. For a procurement view, the useful summary is that GKN Aerospace is rarely a platform prime and almost always a structural, electrical or engine tier one, holding qualified positions that sit deep inside western combat aircraft and transport programmes. Those positions are sticky. A canopy, a harness set or an engine case is qualified to a specific airframe over years of test and certification, so the content tends to run for the life of the programme and then again through the aftermarket, which is why the repair and spares side has grown faster than new build in recent years and why Melrose has been willing to fund capacity ahead of demand.
