GKN Fokker
Dutch aerostructures, thermoplastic composites, aircraft wiring and landing gear
GKN Fokker is the Dutch business that carries the Fokker name inside GKN Aerospace. Anthony Fokker set up in the Netherlands in 1919 after building aircraft in Germany during the First World War, and the company that bore his name went bankrupt in 1996. Stork bought the component and maintenance operations out of the collapse, the Fokker branding returned in 2010, and GKN acquired Fokker Technologies from Arle Capital in 2015 for roughly 706 million euros. The aftermarket half went a different way, with Fokker Services and Fokker Techniek sold to Panta Holdings in 2019. What GKN kept is around 3,000 to 3,500 Dutch staff working across sites including Papendrecht and Hoogeveen, organised into aerostructures, electrical wiring interconnection systems, landing gear and the aftermarket and MRO work attached to them.
Hoogeveen is the interesting plant. It is the group's global technology centre for thermoplastic composites, a material family the Dutch business has pushed harder and longer than most of its competitors. Thermoplastic parts made there include rudder and elevator assemblies for the Gulfstream G650, wing leading edges for the Airbus A380 assembled from eight sections a side, elevators for the Dassault Falcon, floor boards and elevator parts for earlier Gulfstream models, and access doors across every F-35 Lightning II variant. Rotorcraft work covers components for the NH90 and the Apache. The manufacturing methods matter as much as the parts. Resistance welding joins the A380 leading edges using metal mesh strips coated with the same polymer, while induction welding developed with KVE Composites removes the metal conductor entirely and allows robot cells to run overnight without an operator. Research equipment on site includes automated fibre placement with in-house ultrasonic heating heads and compression moulding presses for ribs.
Papendrecht carries the wider aerostructures load, building empennages, wing components and fuselage sections for commercial aircraft, business jets, rotorcraft and fighters. Electrical wiring interconnection systems, the old Fokker Elmo business, supply harnesses and distribution boxes into civil and military programmes, and the landing gear line covers design, build and overhaul. GKN treats landing gear and wiring as named niche technologies within the wider group, so the Dutch centres of excellence feed programmes run from the United Kingdom, Sweden and the United States rather than standing alone. Aftermarket work rounds it out with repair solutions and aerostructures services for operators of the platforms the sites helped build. Scale is worth stating plainly, because it explains how a Dutch business of a few thousand people reaches the programmes it does. GKN Aerospace runs roughly 39 locations across 12 countries with about 15,000 employees, and the Fokker sites sit inside that network as designated centres of excellence rather than as an independent supplier chasing its own orders.
