Santa Barbara Sistemas is the Spanish arm of General Dynamics European Land Systems and the main supplier of land equipment to the Spanish Army. The company in its present form dates to 1960, when the defence ministry pulled together arsenals at Seville, Oviedo, Trubia and A Coruna under the state industrial holding. General Dynamics bought it from the Spanish government in July 2001. The industrial footprint has not moved much since: Alcala de Guadaira outside Seville builds and integrates vehicles, Trubia in Asturias makes gun barrels and heavy weapons, and the Madrid office holds engineering and programme management. Ownership has been politically noisy. Indra publicly stated an intention to buy the business, accusing General Dynamics of under investing in the Spanish industrial base, and General Dynamics answered in 2026 by publishing a plan to 2030 that expands ground vehicle capacity into Aragon, Catalonia and the Basque Country rather than selling. Santa Barbara did sell its stake in the Tess Defence consortium to Indra, booking roughly 38 million euros on the disposal.

Tracked armour is the flagship. The company assembled the Spanish Army's 219 Leopard 2E main battle tanks under licence between 2002 and 2008, and it owns the ASCOD platform that produced the Pizarro infantry fighting vehicle for Spain and the Ulan for Austria. ASCOD has kept selling. Latvia chose it after watching Spain operate the Pizarro for years, and at FEINDEF the company showed two newer variants, a light tank and an armoured recovery vehicle, alongside the VCZ Castor combat engineer version. Wheeled work runs off the GDELS Piranha family, which underpins the Spanish Army's VCR Dragon 8x8, and the company has pitched a 10x10 Piranha derivative as a self propelled artillery carrier.

Munitions and missiles sit underneath the vehicles and are easy to overlook. Trubia reactivated artillery barrel manufacture in 2024, a capacity Europe spent two decades letting wither, and the site's output includes the 155/52 howitzer and tank main armament. Ammunition covers small and medium calibre rounds through to large calibre tank natures. Spain's rearmament has been kind to the accounts. The company reported a profit of about 74 million euros for 2025, a figure that included roughly 38 million from the Tess Defence disposal, and the wider Spanish land sector has been reshaping around it, with Indra announcing an Indra Land Vehicles division, buying a Gijon factory from Duro Felguera and signing a vehicle joint venture with Rheinmetall in March 2026. The company has also handled licensed small arms production for the Spanish forces, including the G36E rifle and the MG4 machine gun, and it participates in missile work on Meteor, Mistral and Spike as a national industrial partner. Amphibious and special vehicles, bridging equipment and life cycle support round out the catalogue, with sustainment of fielded Spanish fleets a steady part of the revenue. Research and development is run as a named line of business rather than a cost centre, which is how a national champion under foreign ownership keeps design authority at home.
