Ammunition

Ammunition is the expendable part of a weapon system: cartridges, shells, rockets, and their components, the things a military buys by the million and consumes by the truckload. It is also the part everyone underestimates until a war starts. Platforms get the headlines. Wars are rationed by magazines.

How rounds are classified

Small-arms ammunition is named by caliber, the bore diameter, with NATO standardized on 5.56mm and 7.62mm rifle rounds and 9mm pistol. Standardization is the quiet achievement here: a Danish rifle can fire American cartridges because NATO STANAGs define the round down to pressure limits. Above small arms, the naming shifts to the projectile family. A 155mm artillery shell is the NATO standard for tube artillery, a 120mm round feeds Western tank guns, and each comes in variants: high explosive, armor-piercing sabot, smoke, illumination, and precision types like the GPS-guided Excalibur shell.

The engineering lives in the details of fuzes and energetics. A fuze deciding whether a shell bursts on impact, after delay, or at a set height above ground changes the weapon's effect more than the explosive weight does, and insensitive munitions programs exist because ammunition that survives a fire or a hit without mass-detonating keeps ships and depots alive.

The lesson everyone relearned after 2022

Ukraine turned ammunition production into strategy news. Artillery consumption at rates up to tens of thousands of 155mm and 152mm shells a week emptied Western stockpiles that had been sized for short wars, and rebuilding capacity proved slow because the bottlenecks are physical: TNT and propellant plants, forging lines for shell bodies, and a workforce that had shrunk for three decades. The US pushed its 155mm output from about 14,000 shells a month before the war toward a target near 100,000, and the EU set a million-shell pledge it initially missed. Every serious defense review since treats magazine depth, not platform count, as the binding constraint.

What does this mean for suppliers?

Ammunition is a components business. Primes like Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, and General Dynamics Ordnance run the final load-assemble-pack plants, but shell bodies, fuzes, primers, propellant, and packaging flow in from a wide second tier, and the current expansion has program offices actively hunting for qualified sources. Energetics handling requires licensing and explosive-safety siting, which keeps casual entrants out, but machining shell bodies and producing fuze electronics are reachable markets for capable manufacturers.
