Bunker
A bunker is a protected structure, dug in, reinforced, or buried, built to keep people and equipment functioning under fire. The word covers everything from a log-and-sandbag machine-gun position built in a day to national command facilities buried under mountains, and the engineering logic scales smoothly across that range: put mass between the contents and the blast, and make the entrance the strongest part, because the entrance is where attacks go.
The spectrum
Field fortifications are the infantry end, trenches, dugouts, and covered fighting positions, and Ukraine returned them to the center of military practice. Both armies dug continuously, because under drone observation anything on the surface is a target within minutes, and the war's characteristic image became the treeline trench with a log roof against FPV drones. At the operational tier sit hardened aircraft shelters, ammunition bunkers, and coastal and border works like the Korean DMZ's fortifications. At the strategic tier are the deep sites: NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain complex under 600 meters of granite, Russia's reported facilities under Kosvinsky and Yamantau mountains, Iran's Fordow enrichment plant, and North Korea's extensive underground military economy. Several nations effectively bank on geology as their final air defense.
The duel with the penetrators
Hardening invited specialized weapons, and the contest has run for decades. Penetrating bombs use heavy, narrow, delayed-fuze designs to punch through earth and concrete before detonating, culminating in the US GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 13,600 kg weapon built explicitly for targets like Fordow and deliverable only by the B-2 and B-21. Defenders answer with depth, since penetration physics has limits, with layered structures that detonate the weapon early, and with dispersal and deception, many possible bunkers rather than one known one. Functional defeat is the attacker's fallback: if the vault cannot be cracked, seal its entrances, cut its power and air, and make it a tomb instead of a headquarters. Analysts debate every strike on a deep facility in exactly these terms.
Who builds hardened structures?
Military construction firms and engineering commands do the big work, with a specialist ecosystem in blast doors, shock isolation (deep command centers float on springs), EMP shielding, and air filtration against chemical and biological agents. The commercial edge of the market, data centers and continuity-of-government facilities, buys the same physics. Demand tracks threat perception, and both the European rearmament wave and Gulf-state investments have the hardening trades busy.
