Casualty Radius
Casualty radius is the distance from a weapon's detonation within which unprotected people are likely to become casualties, conventionally defined as the radius where a stated percentage, often 50 percent, of exposed personnel would be killed or wounded. It is a statistical planning figure, not a wall. Fragments kill well beyond the published radius and people survive inside it, which every experienced soldier knows and every safety table footnotes.
What sets the number
Fragmentation does most of the work in most munitions. A high-explosive shell or grenade kills primarily by throwing metal, so casing design, fragment size and count, and burst height shape the radius more than raw explosive weight. Airburst extends reach dramatically compared with a ground burst that wastes half its energy into dirt. As rough public reference points: a hand grenade's effective casualty radius is on the order of 5 to 15 meters, a 120mm mortar round's tens of meters, a 155mm shell's around 50 meters, and a 2,000 lb bomb's into the hundreds. Blast overpressure, the other mechanism, dominates only up close or in enclosed spaces, where reflections multiply lethality, the reason room-clearing doctrine treats grenades indoors as a different weapon than the same grenade outdoors.
The same physics runs both planning directions. Offensively, it sizes how many rounds a fire mission needs against a target area. Defensively, it sets minimum safe distances for friendly troops, danger-close procedures exist precisely for fire requested inside those distances, and drives dispersion doctrine: the reason vehicles convoy at interval and infantry avoids bunching is arithmetic about one round's radius.
The law and ethics edge
Casualty radius is also the quantitative core of collateral-damage estimation. Modern targeting processes overlay a weapon's effects radius on structures and populations to predict civilian harm, which feeds proportionality judgments the law of armed conflict requires. This is where munition choice becomes a legal act: the difference between a 2,000 lb bomb and a small-warhead precision weapon like the GBU-39 or a Hellfire, against the same building, is measured in exactly this radius, and militaries facing urban fights have shifted toward small-diameter weapons for that reason. Critics and militaries argue over specific strikes, but the analytic frame both sides use is the one this term names.
Is casualty radius the same as lethal radius?
No. Lethal radius conventionally refers to the tighter circle of expected deaths, casualty radius includes wounded, and both differ from the much larger fragment-hazard radius used for range safety, where any fragment reaching a person is unacceptable. Confusing planning radii with safety radii is a classic and occasionally fatal training error.
