Field Artillery
Field artillery is the branch of artillery that provides mobile, indirect fire support to ground forces in the field, as distinct from the fixed guns of coastal or fortress artillery or the specialized weapons of air defense. It is the artillery that moves with the army, the towed and self-propelled howitzers, the mortars, and the rocket systems that follow the maneuver forces and deliver firepower onto targets the ground troops cannot reach directly, and it has been called the king of battle for good reason, because in most wars, including the war in Ukraine, field artillery causes the majority of battlefield casualties and does more than any other arm to shape the ground fight.
What field artillery does and how
The defining characteristic of field artillery is indirect fire, striking targets that the gun crew cannot see, by calculating where the target is and where the gun must aim to drop rounds onto it, guided by forward observers, drones, and other means that locate the target and adjust the fire. This ability to reach beyond line of sight, to strike enemy forces behind cover, in defilade, or well beyond the front, is what makes artillery so powerful, since it delivers destruction onto the enemy from a distance, without exposing the guns to direct fire, and it can mass the fires of many guns onto a single target or spread them across an area, suppressing, destroying, and demoralizing the enemy in ways direct-fire weapons cannot. Field artillery comes in several forms, tube artillery firing shells from howitzers, the 155mm howitzer being the NATO standard, either towed behind vehicles or mounted on self-propelled chassis that can shoot and move quickly, mortars providing shorter-range high-angle fire organic to infantry units, and rocket artillery delivering large volumes of fire or long-range precision, the HIMARS and similar systems that became prominent in Ukraine. The mission spans everything from the immediate support of troops in contact, dropping fire close to friendly forces to break up an enemy attack or support an assault, to deep strikes against enemy artillery, headquarters, and supply lines well behind the front, and modern field artillery increasingly delivers precision, with guided shells and rockets that hit point targets, alongside the traditional area fire that suppresses and destroys across a zone.
Ukraine reaffirmed field artillery's centrality in the most emphatic terms. The war became, in large part, an artillery war, with both sides firing shells in enormous quantities and artillery inflicting the majority of casualties, and the conflict taught or re-taught several hard lessons: that artillery ammunition consumption in a major war vastly exceeds what peacetime stockpiles hold, straining the industrial base of every nation involved, that the modern kill chain of drone-spotting linked to responsive guns can put accurate fire on a target within minutes, and that artillery which lingers in one place is quickly located and destroyed by counter-battery fire, forcing the shoot-and-scoot tactics that define modern artillery survival. These lessons have driven urgent efforts across the West to expand shell production, field more capable and survivable artillery, and integrate the sensors and networks that make artillery fast and accurate.
Why field artillery endures
Despite the rise of airpower, missiles, and drones, field artillery remains indispensable because it provides something no other arm quite matches, responsive, sustained, all-weather firepower under the direct control of the ground commander, available continuously in quantities that aircraft cannot sustain and at a cost that allows it to be used freely. Aircraft are powerful but limited in number and availability, and cannot loiter over a fight indefinitely delivering fire on demand, whereas artillery is always there, ready to fire within minutes of a call, in any weather, as many times as the ammunition allows, which makes it the ground commander's own reliable firepower rather than a supporting arm that must be requested and awaited. The war in Ukraine, far from making artillery obsolete, demonstrated its enduring dominance, and the current investment across many militaries in more and better artillery, more shells, more capable guns, better sensors and networks, reflects the recognition that in a major ground war, the side with superior artillery, in quantity, quality, and the ability to use it fast and accurately, holds a decisive advantage.
How is field artillery different from other kinds of artillery?
Field artillery is specifically the mobile artillery that supports ground forces in the field with indirect fire, moving with the army and following the fight, which distinguishes it from other artillery categories defined by different roles. Air-defense artillery, for instance, is artillery adapted to shoot at aircraft and missiles rather than ground targets, a different mission with different weapons and doctrine. Coastal or fortress artillery, historically, consisted of fixed guns emplaced to defend harbors or fortifications, tied to a location rather than mobile. Naval artillery is the guns mounted on ships. What sets field artillery apart is its combination of mobility, its ability to travel with and keep pace with the ground forces it supports, and its role, delivering indirect fire onto ground targets in support of the land battle, so field artillery is the artillery of the mobile land war, the guns that go where the army goes and provide the firepower that shapes the fight on the ground.
