Armament
Armament is the weapons fit of a platform: the guns, missiles, bombs, and torpedoes an aircraft, ship, or vehicle carries into a fight. The word also covers the industry that produces them, as in "armaments manufacturer." Where ammunition describes the consumables themselves, armament describes what a given platform can bring, and that turns out to be less a hardware question than people assume.
Integration is the hidden product
A weapon does not work on a platform until it is integrated: physically cleared on the pylon or rail, wired into the fire-control system, and certified through a test campaign that proves separation is safe across the flight envelope. This is slow and expensive, which produces one of the industry's quiet truths: the list of weapons a jet is cleared to carry is a bigger discriminator than most performance figures. F-16s fly for 25 air forces partly because four decades of integration work lets them carry nearly everything in the Western inventory. Adding a new missile to a European Typhoon or an F-35 is a multi-year, nine-figure program, and Ukraine's improvised integrations, HARM missiles on Soviet-era MiG-29s, impressed specialists precisely because that kind of shortcut almost never works.
Loadout is the operational half of the word. A strike fighter trades fuel, weapons, and stealth against each other on every sortie. An F-35 carrying weapons internally stays stealthy but carries less. Hang more on the wings and it becomes visible to radar. Ships face the same arithmetic in vertical-launch cells, a Burke-class destroyer's 96 cells must split between air defense, land attack, and ASW weapons, and cannot be reloaded at sea, which makes magazine allocation before deployment a genuinely strategic decision.
Who counts as an armaments supplier?
The primes that build missiles and guns sit at the top: RTX, Lockheed Martin, MBDA, Rheinmetall, Elbit. Below them, armament is a deep component market, seekers, warheads, rocket motors, fuzes, ejector racks, gun barrels, and fire-control software all come from specialist firms. Rocket motors illustrate the fragility: US production concentrated into essentially two suppliers, Aerojet Rocketdyne (bought by L3Harris in 2023) and Northrop Grumman, and motor shortages became the pacing constraint on missile production when demand spiked after 2022.
